Default Wearever Silver Brake pads - good choice?

Am looking to replace brake pads on my 1999 Altima since am starting to hear the metal to metal rubbing noise - Ironically, the noise goes away when I hit the brakes.

Link: Wearever Silver Pads @ Advanced Auto Parts

These were the cheapest brakes(< $20) but I would be happy if they last 2-3 years.

Any one use them or buy them?

Don't go "cheap" on your brakes. Just a few more $ will get you much better ones.
Think of how long the original equipment brakes lasted.

Agreed..the original ones lasted close to 14 yrs...but am not looking to hold onto the car for much longer..with the maintenance and insurance alone am paying close to the worth of the car every year..

Does the 'cheap' ones last 2 yrs or more say if you drive 10k miles a year?

Many of the low end brake pads have a lot of metal particles in the brake pad material, hence they are called semi-metallic. The metal helps the brake pad wear longer, but they can also squeal more than a somewhat softer brake pad material. I have a 2002 Altima, and I replaced the front brake pads just a few months ago when they had just under 100K miles on the factory original brake pads. I went to the Nissan dealer and bought Nissan replacement pads, which cost somewhere around $80. I installed them with no problem, it took about 10-15 minutes per wheel. No sqeaks at all, and the rotors are still looking almost like new so I did not need to turn the rotors. The factory original rear brake pads still have plenty of wear remaining, but I'll probably replace them next year.

Thanks everyone

Bought the Wearever Silver Brake pads(MKD 430) for $15 + Tax with 20% off coupon and did a store pick up this morning.

The box came with 4 front brake pads.

Advanced Auto Parts has an online sale today and use NOJOKE as coupon code at checkout.

Installation was a breeze for a first-timer, it took about a little over an hour - 30+ minutes for each tire.

Follow instructions below for driver side:

1. Remove the 4 nuts that hold the tire.
2. Remove the two nuts on the Caliper.
3. Depending on the car make & model, You may or may not have the pins to hold the brake pads together. If you do remove them.
3A. Remove the Caliper, then the pins and then the brake pads.
4. Squeeze the Caliper to remove the brake fluid out of the system.
5. Install the brake pads.
6. Install the pins(depending on the car make & model)
6A. Put the caliper back on the brake pads.
7. Put the two nuts on the Caliper and tighten.
8. Put the tire back on along with the 4 nuts.

Repeat the above steps on the passenger side now and save yourself $200 - $250 bucks.

"metal on metal"noise that goes away when you push they brake is the wear indicator. Don't go cheap, a little money goes a long way with brakes
