There's no rhyme nor reason with my wifes tastes, she either likes it or not. She isn't into cars so doesn't care about heritage or anything. If it looks ok and a decent colour she's normally happy but every now and then, for no apparent reason, she'll throw a spanner in the works.

I do not ask my wife. She thinks hovercraft are "stupid and stupid" I am certainly not going to ask her what she thinks of a car I am considering. I will discuss with her whether we can afford it, but nothing else. She wants me to get something that I like, as long as it is not a hovercraft.

Because you're the authority on what people can and cannot spend their money on? First off, we all MAKE own money so if my friend decides to buy a new vehicle for the sheer fun of it, why in the world shouldn't he?!

The people I've met over the years who feel the need to downgrade others usually are the ones who have issues themselves. Not even going to waste my time arguing with someone who is either jealous or has an inferiority complex.

One's vanity should not have access to one's wallet.

It was the Audi A-8 as beater material that gave me a clue.
Hey spend your money anyway you want, but when you've spent it all dont be wondering where it went..

I called my F-150 a beater, I don't use the world to refer to a trashy vehicle but rather a simple term to refer to a daily driver.

And I'm quite careful with my money thank you very much.

We never tried to one up each other in terms of who had the nicer or more expensive car, but we were always in competition in terms of performance to see who could get the faster laptime or 1/4 mile time. I tend to think of it more as healthy competition then one-upmanship. Even when that was going on, oftentimes it was more about trying to get that extra ounce of performance out of the car and helping each other out. The TT I just picked up is never going to run 10's like my friends T/A, but we're going to have some fun playing with it and getting some extra power and 'fun' out of it.

OK mix up in terminology as this is what comes to mind when the term beater is used..

No, you specifically referred to your buddy's A-8 as a beater. I don't recall you even mentioning an F-150 in this thread.

To answer the question, no, never been into that with my friends. At this point in my life my focus is raising my daughter so I buy vehicles for practicality in order to save my discretionary income for other things.

Even when I was young and single and took some pride in what I drove I wasn't into that. There was a strong sense of camraderie among my group of gearhead buddies; when one of us upgraded everybody was happy for the "team." We did as a group enjoy one-upping the car guys who weren't in our circle, though.
