I met you twice old friend. You gave me some things while you shook my hand. We'll always miss you, but will always remember you for your life and what you did for all of us. Just so you know, I never sold that stuff you did for me and gave me, even though I had many great offers for it. It's not for sale. It never was and never will be.
"US car designer Carroll Shelby, who gave his name to the famous Shelby Cobra sports car, has died aged 89.
His company, Carroll Shelby International, said Mr Shelby died at a hospital in Dallas, Texas.
Mr Shelby, who had a long and varied career, had a heart transplant in 1990 and a kidney transplant in 1996."
Back "when", in about 1968 - 1974, when I was hell-bent on becoming an automotive engineer designing F-1 cars (hey; someone's got to do it, right?) I met him at Riverside in SoCal in the pits, and then, many years later, out at the new plant north of Las Vegas, I saw him in their showroom and we talked briefly.
He always took some time to talk to us "lessers", us mere fans and devotees. He was funny, though he could also be a tad bit gruff. He was always in a bit of a rush of course, he more than many folks understood the pressing rush of time in our lives.
A mere few years back, in 1969, you could walk into your local Ford dealer and purchase a new 289 Cobra for about $7300. (That was only about $1500 more than another classic, an Austin-Healey 3000GT, but it had roll-up windows! Wow!)
...they still have them overseas. Even someone not an enormous fan of the Mustangs can appreciate his contribution to the automotive community.
