2008 Hyundai Elantra or 2007 VW Passat?
Which one should I buy? I can afford either one, however I'd like some of the pros and cons. I'm also interested in which has better resale as the Passat is about 4 to 5 thousand more. Thanks!

The Passat is arguably a better car, but the Elantra gets good reviews. I havent driven the new Elantra, but we have an 01 Sonata GLS V6 and its been great to us, minus a few warranty-covered hiccups.
Id have to go with the V-dub on this, even though Im not a fan of VW.

If you're concerned with resale ,forget both and consider a Toyota.I don't know why you would think you could'nt afford one.Unless you like taking your car in for repairs-even if it's covered by that 10/100 warranty.Come on people, its not that difficult.

I've considered Toyota
But when you look at the ratings, Elantra is now just as good and the Passat nearly as good. The Passat is also much safer than the Corrola (the model I'd compare to both). I would say the resale on VW and Toyota are comparable.

Why do you think they're trying to compare them to a toyota?

Turner, my only thing about Toyota nowadays is here in Houston they seem to have knocked the price up a lot just on reputation. The Corolla is practically as much as the VW around here. Number two, i goofed. I am looking at the Jetta, not the Passat. Oops!

If you are going for cool...the Passat
If you are going for reliability and a rock solid warranty...the Elantra.

Kind of a weird cross-shop there. The VW equivalent to the Elantra would more closely be the Jetta, and the Hyundai equivalent to the Passat would more closely be Sonata, or possibly even the Azera. It's hard to make a recommendation based on your selections because it's hard to tell what you really want.

Opinion: don't want to make your decision for you but.
I have driven the VW passat with the 2.0 Turbo engine and it is very fast.
We currently own a 2005 passat diesel and it has been relatively problem free. Except the sunroof leaked and we got it repaired. And we had to get the trunk hinges replaced because they were overly stiff. (weird I know?)
Although VW has had historically spotty quality and their dealers can be hit or miss. We have a good dealer we work with currently.

VW has a bad reputation for not being reliable and having sketchy dealers . If you buy the Passat , you are going to be taking a bit of a chance . I would just go with the Elantra . If taking a risk of buying a possibly unrealiable car does not bother you , then go for the Passat .
