Assume a low-mileage used car from any year between 2009-2011.

1) Honda Civic
2) Mazda 3
3) Toyota Corolla

I really like what I've seen and heard about the Mazda 3's, but a lot of people think first of Honda and Toyota as tops in reliability.

If you plan to keep it for 3 years or less and you REALLY like the Mazda over the other two, go for it.

However, if you plan to keep it long term, go for the Honda or Toyota.

Civic's of this generation have been "terrible" by Honda standards. Go with the Mazda

Those are three of my favorite cars. They are the right size, super reliable, and economical to own. I ama also a fan of the Hyundai Elantra. The order in which I would buy is:

1. Toyota Corolla

2. Hyundai Elantra

3. Honda Civic

4. Mazda 3

I would put it like this:

1) Civic (Reliability and somewhat of a coolness to it)

2) Corolla (Reliability) and Elantra (Looks)
.
.
.
.
3) Mazda 3

Mazda3 is what I went with. I would mention that the Mazda has a pretty crappy interior, but if the Civic is on the list that's obviously not a huge concern. Reliability would be Toyota or Honda. Mazda is pretty average in reliability, which far behind the curve for economy cars. More fun to drive, though. You pick your battles. Average reliability on something I don't plan on keeping more than about 6-8 years is fine for me.

That Mazda is a serious 'pocket rocket', so if you want a neat little funmobile with plenty of zip, give it a shot, and especially with a 5-speed.

I've been a Honda fan since the late seventies, and my first new car was a 1985 Accord LX, which was a phenomenal car.

You can't go wrong with any of the cars you listed.

If i was limited to the three up there, i'd go with the Mazada 3, or the Mazdaspeed 3 if I could work it into the budget. If I was wanting a fun to drive car with serious attention to detail and refinement...i'd be looking from Germany, and specifically at Volkswagens...but i'm very very very biased.

The Corolla, very much so! It'll outlast your desire to drive it. Do routine maintenance and you'll have no problems with it whatsover.
