Those cars are bulletproof. Just make sure that the floor and trunk pans are rust free no matter where you live... and check very closely if you live in the north.

Yeah, they are slow on take-off, but once up to speed, you can go along with the best of them. I had a little '84 190D diesel 4dr that was really slow on take-off, but once up to speed, it was fine.

My Mercedes now is a big S-Class with a V8... it will move this 4900 pound car with ease, then again it don't get 42 mpg like my little diesel did.

Diesel fuel is 10 cents higher then regular unleaded but the gas milage would be better then the lousey 15 mpg i get from my 85 olds delta 88.
Are parts for a 83 benz diesel more expensive then american car parts & is labor more expensive ?

Yes, the W123 series Benz diesel is a workhorse car. You often see them as taxicabs in Europe and the Middle East.

While the drivetrain is pretty durable and dependable, you still have to deal with the electrical system and other parts - which was/is expensive. Keep that in mind when you budget for ownership costs.

From reading your posts, it might be an OK car for you. Parts, when needed, tend to be a lot more than Detroit iron, but they don't need much maintenance normally.

With the weird and expensive gas you guys have in Cali, going Diesel might be the way to go, being smog exempt would help you.

I went with a diesel mercedes after my gasoline mercedes wouldn't pass smog. The old gasser was cheap salvage tittle anyway so it wasn't really worth anything. I stripped it of the good parts, installed them on my diesel and the rest sold off for a dity profit to offset most of the diesel car cost. The price of fuel in California is favorable to diesel over gasoline.
GAS BUDDY

That said, I wouldn't be caught dead in a 240d. Its a 3000LB car with 64hp. My 300d has 148hp and its slow. That said, its averaging 29mph in a 50/50 mix of city and highway driving while burning the cheapest fuel available at the moment. Oh and no smog check. **** smog check.
