I have a friend whos selling a 4 door 83 benz diesel & hes asking $1,600.00. The car has p/s, p/b, pdl, stereo, sunroof & bucket seats. Its a 4 cylinder & runs good. The interior & paint is good & the windows are manual.
The a/c condensor is shot & the tires are good in the rear & poor in the front (front end alignment is good). The engine has been rebuilt & has approx 50k miles. The tranny is automatic. The ca car is exempt from smog & the mpg is good. Is $1,600.00 a good asking price ? The car is a dog uphills.

It cannot be a six cylinder, as a 240 D was only a four cylinder. From what I have heard, they are extremely slow, but are bulletproof reliability wise. It is not my kind of car, but it might suit you as it will get much better gas mileage than your Oldsmobile.

Very slow on acceleration, but at your low elevations Naturally aspirated diesel is OK.

They are reliable and will god the 'long haul' (500,000 + miles).

If it is very straight and no rust AND something you can tinker with... might work for you. I will stick with my $35 Rabbits, quantums, jettas, passats, golfs, dashers, ... (50 mpg instead of the 32 of the 240d) But mine are WAY more hassle / noisy (road noise).

The car isnt for me. Its for a friend. Im poorer then a illegal so the price is way out of my range. The car is a dog at accelerations & uphill but it surely runs good & is very reliable. The car is very straight with no rust or accidents.

It sounds like a good deal, overall, with the rebuilt engine. I would talk to an independent Mercedes mechanic about the air conditioner to see what that would cost to repair, and have the transmission checked. 240s are slow, but otherwise are pretty reliable, and can be converted to waste vegetable oil.

Those cars are terrible. People think they are good because of the reliable and durable diesel engines but that is the only good part about those cars. Their A/C systems are not reliable, they don't cool well and they take a lot of power from the already low horsepower engine. They have vacuum leaks on a regular basis which is a problem because almost everything runs on vacuum including the door locks. Parts are very expensive and finding a good mechanic is hard since most are not familiar with diesel engines. The 240's are four cyl. and very slow like others have already mentioned and the 300's are five cyl. and are still slow.

I'm pretty sure there are many mechanics familiar with diesel Benzes. These are (were) not rare cars, and did build up a great reputation for Mercedes.

The asking price is $1,700.00 firm. My friend wants a/c so shes passing on the car. If anyones intrested just pm me. The car is worth the price & it runs & looks good + the mpg is great & no smog test required. Tags are about $80.00 a year.

Solid vehicles, awesome engines but they are total slugs. It appears as if they were designed with just barely enough power to safely navigate in modern traffic.
