I don't care what other people think about what I drive, though they probably think we do pretty well money wise since we both happen to have new 2012 vehicles (Nissan quest and Hyundai genesis coupe). I drive the quest, and it's a people hauler plain and simple. He likes fun small cars, and he keeps saying he wants something like a Lexus ES 350 for his next car, and I keep telling him he won't be happy with something like that.
I personally would LOVE a jeep wrangler. But I live in a place where I couldn't use it on trails and such since I live in an ugly flat city. I've already told him if we move to Colorado or Utah, I'm getting one. But I've always dreamed of owning one. When on a trip to Cozumel a few years ago, DH rented a red one for me for my birthday for the day...it was one of the best birthdays I've had! I'm thinking about getting a new grand Cherokee when my lease is up in a couple of years just to have a jeep!
I love to drive, I enjoy cars in general, and don't judge others for what they drive.
I'll freely admit that I am highly judgmental of people and their cars. I simply can't help myself for some reason. It seems that people who drive such and such cars fulfill a sort of stereotype. There's the dude with the huge jacked up truck with shiny rims and "Bad Boy" type stickers on the rear windows. The lawyer looking/executive type person driving a BMW or a Porsche. Then there's the folks who drive "cute" cars like minis, new Beetles, and so on. I'll admit when I see someone in a Bimmer I automatically think: " Well there goes a prick".
Not sure what people think of my cars. Both are pieces of crap. Not that I couldn't afford a very nice car myself, but rather than I like to have money.
Do you dress to impress (ever hear the phrase dress for success?)? Do you wash yourself so that others don't think of you as a slob? Do you wear deoderant for yourself or for others? Why do you cut your hair and keep it trimmed neat? Think about this carefully... Why might you keep your house clean and your yard mowed? If you want to look good for a job interview or for a date does that make you insecure? Is wearing deoderant or getting a haircut a sign of insecurity?
Your car, like your house or your clothes or your haircut, is an extension of your personality whether you care to admit it or not, or whether you car to take advantage of that or not.
My 16-year F150 4x4 with used tires should say that I prefer to be able to take $550 to my bank each month instead of sending $600 to a bank and an insurance company. However, I seriously doubt that it says anything to anyone who matters.
I drive a BMW M5 everyday which means I'm a "rooster".
I also drive a Subaru Baja which means I'm either a lesbian or a hipster (probably the latter because I'm a guy). My other two cars that I have aren't driven enough to make statements.
After having driven sports cars and luxury cars among others, I have settled into a black GMC Denali. I dont what it says, but it is loaded and comfortable, especially on long drives.
