We're just going to go to our favorite mechanic and let him look at it. We don't trust this particular dealer anymore.

I've got an older Jeep that had that done by a previous owner. However, there are a lot of vehicles you can't do that with. They have O2 sensors behind the CC. In fact, a friend of mine briefly owned a 97 Intrepid. If I remember right, that car had 3 CCs. Ridiculous!

Update: My mechanic spent all day researching and checking my car. It apparently is a problem with computer programming. Somehow, the computer is programmed for California emissions, but the car is built with 50 state emissions. I'm not sure how to explain it, or how it got that way, but the car was never a California car. The computer seems to be looking for data that the 50 state system does not produce. This is way over my head, and I'm not even sure I'm explaining it right. How much would it cost to replace the computer? It sounds expensive, but no quote on it yet. Looks like we bought the wrong used car.

Well, he should check if the ECU version fits the engine model. FWIW, "Cali" emissions protocols are now used in Cal + most Northeastern/Mid atlantic states, so there shouldn't be a major "50 state" vs "49 state" conflict.

That's interesting. I will ask if he knows that tomorrow. He did say we may need to go to a VW dealer where, I assume, they know this stuff. ( the earlier dealer was not a VW dealer ).

Update time! The mechanic I have is fantastic. He really put in a lot of time for our car. He got my permission and took it to VW Dealer to get their diagnosis. They took a lot of time on it too, but determined that it isn't the computer as he had suspected. The original repair was the correct one, except that they used really cheap aftermarket parts. They redid the work using the correct parts. I will get the car in the morning though. Roughly $1500. I now have to figure out how to get the $500 I spent the first time back. I don't know if I can.

Update: I still don't have the car back. We got the car 13 days ago with 10 of them in the shop! VW says there is an electrical issue somewhere. 3 days later they still can't tell me what it is. If it ever gets fixed, I'm going to cut my losses and sell this piece of junk.

I'm pretty sure my insurance company would have covered it (maybe even my home insurance!) but I carry a $500 deductible. Of course, if I owned a car with a $2000 catalytic converter it might be worth it!
