Lol at a trailblazer doing any offroadin. I used to have a four door 2wd s10 blazer that ws fun. I even drifted an offramp with it. Like most older gms its really modable. The 262 v6 is a beast. And cousin to the 350, being one minus two cylinders. Theres also older rwd volvos. Those and 2.3 mustangs respond well to mods like turbos. Hell any fox chassis car wil be a good choice because of the aftermarket for the fox and fox4 mustang. Certain older subarus. Like the 2.5 rs or even an outback. A lot of suspension and engine parts inerchange, example; the outback and impreza have the same suspension. The six cylinders dont seem to be as modable but just about every model has a turbo stock.
Just look for somethig that you know can be moded. Hell ive seen some bad ass z34 barettas and supercharged grand prixs and bonnevilles. You could even look for mn12 tbirds, cougars, and mark viii's. They have v8s and like the supercoupe or whatever the cougar version was, had a supercharged v6. Those with a few mods could put a mustang to shame. Ford softened them up though. They already had a better suspension. Just needed the power and the stiffer suspension components. Id swap in a manual, stiffer sway bars, the mark viii upper control arms which are aluminum, some heads and headers. The v8 and s/c v6 has tbe 8.8 irs. They are really bad ass cars and weigh about the same as a stang, around 3300#
That's a very clean looking 3rd gen, especially at $3500. Any more pictures?
These are mainly pictures I toook when I got it, I swapped out the turn signals, and removed front license plate holder.
Interior is in good shape too, I recenly had to do the heater core, and everything was in good shape coming apart. Carpet could be replaced, I mean it is 27 years old. The previous owner was restoring it for his son, new shocks, bushings, redid valve guids, and rear main and oil pan seals. Doesn't smoke or leak.
Even had a brand new remanufactured quadrajet on it(its last year of carbed 3rd gens)
It was great for what I wanted, clean looking but nothing too nice I feel ashamed to play with. Its a non-Iroc z28 with an LG4, the most anemic v8 in the third gen. It is also non-original enough to not be amazing all original, to feel guilty of messing it up. Plan is do some sort of crate motor, and eventually end up with about 400 hp, a 6-speed, and decent suspension. But lots of in between stuff. I am still in the process of new locks(passenger is a little rough), and while in the doors cleaning and regreasing everything. I need to repaint alot of black trim like the door handles, headlight bezels, little things.
Buy a 70 maverick for $500 with manual steering. Try taking off at full throttle and turning the corner without going into the other lane and then try to straighten it out before you hit the curb. Now that's fun mister!! Especially with a three speed column shift. You've got 5.6 turns lock to lock to play with. Yee-Haw!!!!
I got a manual 5-speed 94 Ford Escort in 2005, for about $2500.00, hoping it would run for a year while I saved money for a better car. I ran that car to death for 5 more years without a single issue, just kept the oil changed, then sold it to a friend for $500.00 who is still driving it today. I believe it had a Mazda engine in it, and that was the difference, something someone told me anyway.
I got this for $3500 last april, 1985 z28, 5-speed, t-tops it has lots of new suspension parts.. Its only a 305, but its a start
IF it matters the 2000 Camaro next to it, I bought for $2k, its a 5-speed, v6, 200 hp, I put z28 sway bars and poly bushings in and new shocks, and some ebay rice/race brakes. Still pretty fun to drive.

That's were I would go too. An 80's early 90's Camaro or Mustang. Nothing FWD for $3,000 or less is going to be worth a hoot. It's also very expensive to fix a car that a 16 year old kid beat the daylights out of and sold it because it's about ready to puke. His Dad was smart to have him unload it before it is harder to sell because it doesn't run and has serious repairs needed.
1991-94 Nissan Sentra SE-R
1988-1994 Honda Prelude (because chances are, it's very rare to find a later model below $3k)
1999-2003 Mazda Protege - these cars handle very well and are very fun to drive for being in the economy segment.
1999-2002 Ford Escort ZX2 - Really not bad cars at all and can be found for very cheap.
