I'm looking to buy a 4cyl car that gets good gas mileage but I'm considering total cost of ownership. Not having to replace a timing belt is a savings of about $500 or more but I can't find any good info on what 4 cyl cars have timing chains. I 'm trying to figure out what is the cheapest car overall to own etc, gas, maintenance, insurance.

I don't know of any, but I agree with you, the cost of timing chaing replacement is nuts. It was one thing that helped me pick my car(v6 though), was it had a timing train.

Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T has a timing chain equipped four banger. I'm less worried about the cost of eventual timing belt replacement than I am about the possibility of unexpected belt failure (whether premature or due to negligence) which could lead to catastrophic engine failure.

The Toyota 1ZZ and 2ZZ engines are chain driven.....Corolla, Matrix, Chevy Prizm, Pontiac Vibe have these engines.

The Saturn S-series has a timing chain. Routine maintenance is pretty simple to DIY on those cars. Most of the routine stuff is really easy to get at. Throw in a manual transmission and you have the creme of the crop.

I've had two of these cars, a 96 SL (very base model) that consistently got around 42 mpg (even as it approached 200,000 miles), and a 99 SL2 (which I am still driving) that seems to be fairly consistent at 38 mpg.
