LOCKHART, Texas (Reuters) - Everything's bigger in Texas including, as of Wednesday, the speed limit.

A new 41-mile (65-kilometer) stretch of toll road between San Antonio and Austin is now open with an 85-mph (137-kph) speed limit, the highest posted speed limit in the United States.

Texas opens first 85-mph highway in U.S., but trucks may shun it - Yahoo! News

Well remember that out in West Texas the speed limit is 80. And so far no problems.

I drive faster than that now (speed limit is underposted at 70), and do not need to pay any tolls.

The Virginia State Police do not agree or approve.

I really don't see the big deal and think the $12 toll is ridiculous. If I want to go 85 mph all I need to do is get on I90, I94 or I294 around here during the morning rush. Just keeping up with traffic on my morning drive into the office is 85-90mph and i'm in the right lane getting passed.....

The posted limits are a joke. I went by a Illinois state cop at 80+ a few days back.. He didn't even move and that was 25+ over.

I wonder how fast people will go on a 85 mph road. 70mph in TX is really 75-80, if you actually see what the drivers are actually doing on those roads.

I bet there will be some people going 90+, possibly 100 on it. As much as it pains me to say it, 80-85 mph is about the max that should be posted for public highways. There's just too many crappy cars out there that shouldn't be going any faster than that, they pose a safety hazard. I cringe whenever I see some old SUV with worn out shocks and tires zip past me going 80+ weaving in and out of traffic.

Yeah, but have you driven in West Texas? You can pretty much see another car coming an hour away at 80 mph!

Old unsafe cars should not be an excuse for slow speed limits. It should be a reason for drivers to keep their cars in acceptable driving condition. A car with blwon shocks, aged steering components, bald tires, worn brakes is a hazard to every car around them at 25 mph, and at 60 mph.

Lets just say the truth, the car doesn't need to be on the road. And there's no reason you ekep everyone else who can safely go 85 or 90 mph from doing so!

But that's just me on my soap box...Heck, I just want our interstate system to be used like the German Autobahn.
