Let me throw out my Pontiac Vibe as an alternative. Yes, Pontiac is dead, but in almost every mechanical aspect, the Vibe is a Toyota Matrix, with either a 1.8L Corolla or 2.4L Camry drivetrain. Plus they even come in AWD if you are inclined. I picked up a 2 yr old Vibe GT last year with 36K miles for $12,400. You can find a good 09-10 in the $10-15K range quite often. A comparable Matrix usually runs a good $2K more. Plus Pontiacs have a 5 yr 100K mile powertrain warranty vs the Toyota 60K warranty. A lot of people on the genVibe website have well over 100K on their cars, some over 200K and even a few in the 300-500K range.

Good luck on your search!
