So I will soon be looking for a cheap fun reliable gas saver for a long commute I have to make occasionally here in Texas and was wondering about some possibilities. It does snow here, but usually no more than a few inches that melts after a few days. Since I will have to go on some back roads I'm almost thinking FWD or AWD might be better, but not a necessity. It's basically going to be a beater, so really cosmetics go second to reliability. I suppose fun is less of a priority as well, but it would be a nice plus. What do you suggest?
I'd be open to anything from a Geo Metro to a Corvette. I just really wish I knew I would need this now as I think the '02 Firebird 3.8 convertible I passed on a couple years back would've been a nice.
You're requirements are really all over the place (like a Firebird in snow).
Eh, i drove a mid 80's 6 cylinder firebird for about 8 years through high school and college and didn't have any major problems in the snow...however, when I finally stopped driving the car daily, it was because I was having trouble getting to work in 6 inches of white stuff...I then went out and purchased a FWD daily driver.
OP - You need to provide more information. Price Range will be very helpful, as well what you consider a "gas saver" and what you're thinking is "reliable"...at a certain price point, you'll start to see reliability suffer, so it really depends on how cheap of a beater you're wanting.
Look in your local Craigslist for an older well kept Civic or Corolla..in the under $2K range.
From the Dallas Ft Worth area with a search criteria under $2K.= http://dallas.craigslist.org/search/...00&maxAsk=2000
At this point i'd lose the fun factor and focus more on the reliability factor..
Get 95-96 Civic hatchback with V-Tec engine. Manual. 45 mpg and can't kill it. It's a GOLDEN STANDARD of gas sipping fun to drive vehicle. Get one with 1.6L engine.
