New "sports" cars are a lot better. Displacement gets smaller, HP gets higher, new materials get stronger and lighter, companies introduce turbos. Others focus on handling to go with the power plant. Suspensions are designed right off of F1 cars and such with computer controlled dampening etc...

Its more and more technology related as time goes.

Take the Mazda speed 3 for example, my buddy installed a cold air intake and gained 50 hp, on top of that with a chip and exhaust. he was running probably over 300 hp and getting 30 miles a gallon in his daily

More and more of these "sports" cars are front wheel drive and they suffer at the strip. So companies are putting out 4wd and the power-to-ground is unbeatable.. You car will take these cars off the line, but they will catch up fast.

Your car is good for going in straight lines, if its geared right it can be really good in the quarter mile. To a lot of guys, this is all that matters.

V6 Mustang will not beat a 13.5 1/4 miles ET.

Nice!

Is that a Windsor motor ?
I got a Windsor 351 to do 13.5's in a 70 Cougar
when I was a teenager in the 70's. Got to shoepolish "Heavy" on the windshield too, ha ha

A 13 in a 4000lb beast is totally respectable

Oh yeah, if you race a lot, get a driveshaft loop.
broken universal on a launch = no fun

Maybe a torque converter blanket too ?

I think that is all there is regarding performance.

That video actually showed 13.90 ET at 100mph. I presume you did better that evening.
Yah, ran 13.64. since then bumped the timing from 9 degrees to 24 and also switched out the stock radiator and stock (non clutch) fan. I think I gained a few horsepower.

We set the timing using a vaacum gauge this time. It was pulling about ~20 lbs when we started and ~50 lbs when we were done.

I'm having a real problem now spinning the tires. All I do is spin. It's killing me.

^^ Forgot to add any of the 392 Hemi and the Cadillac Vs with the supercharged V8 engine.

Drag radial will do you nicely. Perhaps some airbags. Automatic transmission? Do you use a linelock?

I'm so old I have no idea what a linelock is. Har! Gonna look it up. We figured it out with the gear ratio on the AOD and the gear in the rear (Tru-trac) I start with 4:11 from the start. That's about all I can remember. It's got leaf springs on the back and air shocks pumped to max. It seemed when I added air shocks I got a lot more "handling" from the car.

It's got a 351 Cleveland with Edelbrock heads and Edelbrock air gap intake and a stage two Jet performance blueprinted carb. MSD 6 box, some kind of super duper coil, racing plugs (the ones recommended by Edelbrock for running with their heads), Moroso spark plug wires, Hooker headers, Flowmaster racing mufflers.

Wow. Good god. Just looked up the Stage 2 carb and it's $733 bucks.

I think I bought mine for ~250 bucks and they charged me ~250 bucks when they went through it. Then again, that was like 5 - 6 years ago.
Carb is a Holley 750 with vaacuum secondaries.

My AOD has the "Wide ratio" gears.

Hey, if you say your old Ford handles badly at speed, what kind of condition is the suspension in? Some better shocks, replace whatever bushings need replacing - it will never handle as sharp as a "real" sports car, but it should not remind you of a wheelbarrow full of wet cement either.

You could go to urethane bushings, but that may be too much for continued street use.

Ah found it. Box is a MSD 6AL
MSD 6420 6AL Series Multiple Spark Ignew nition Controller
and coil is a MSD Blaster coil
MSD Ignition 8203 MSD Blaster Coil

It has new bushings all around. Replaced them about 4 years ago. . Was wondering about dropping a Mustang II front end in it. Or any kind of new front end. Any suggestions?

Trans Brake is the same as a Line lock. AOD behind a 351C? Impressive. I thought you were C4 or C6 as your car has old school look. Do you have a limited slip differential? What camshaft are you using?

Hot Rodding is so expensive it is ridiculous.
