It's smoking.

I almost did a head on collision when a work van I shared with a smoking friend (1980) blinded me; the light spectrum spread over the glass completely.

But that was a dirty van; really, really dirty. The McDonalds' wrappers on the passenger side represented an archeological dig.
Came in for free one weekend with help just to clean it out.

Could be a heater core, but probably is just normal outgassing of plastic interior parts. I like the Invisible Glass pre-moistened towels, but as good a job can be done with a good glass cleaner and good paper towels, as Grandpa noted, the cheap ones won't work for this job.

Usually with a leaking heater core you will see some antifreeze drops on the heater outlet in the foot well, and/or smell that maple syrup like smell of the hot coolant.

Make sure you use a product *without* ammonia!

A tool like this will help remove the schmutz...for lack of a better word.

I have used an old clean, dry tube sock turned inside out to wipe it away. It works wonders with no smearing.

Use a decent powered flashlight and at the right angle... it should show.

Not in my case. I don't smoke; no one has ever smoked in my car.

I do appreciate all the suggestions. I think I'll try the Invisible Glass since a few people mentioned that one.

If you clean it all off and it reappears starting above the vents in the dash, check out the heater core issue others have mentioned.

If it's the heater core any attempt to clean it will result in a messy affair fast!!

Best to try a test spot first.

Ammonia (clear non sudsy) is one of the best glass cleaners made. Why do you say not to use it?
