Because Toyota builds the best vehicles in the world, and Honda is close, but not quite there.

Until a few years ago when it was dethroned by the Elantra as the industry standard among compacts, the Civic had ruled that segment of the industry, which is why it's the third best selling car of the past 25 years, trailing only the Camry & Accord.

2012 marked the 11th consecutive year, as well as the 15th time in the past 16 years, that the Camry was the best-selling car in the USA.

Neither Honda nor Toyoita has ever had to inundate rental-car fleets with automobiles in order to stay at the top of the sales charts as the Taurus did when it topped the sales charts for five straight years; doing so demolishes a car's resale value, which certainly explains why Asian automobiles have had exceptional resales value for decades.

Honda also achieved another milestone last year as the Accord & Civic placed fourth & fifth in sales last year, a first for the company, with the CR-V finishing in ninth place.

Toyota was selling nearly 20% of its cars to rental and corporate fleets in 2009-2010 - not to the same extent as the domestics.
