I work about 47 weeks a year (gotta take vaca!). I work the standard M-F 5 day work week. 5 days x 47 weeks = 235 days commuting to work.
It takes me on average 35 minutes each way, so 70 minutes each work day. 235 x 70 = 16,450 minutes / 60 = 274 hours / 24 = 11 days.
So I spend around 11 full days out of the year commuting to and from work.
That's how I justify leasing a new $30-40k car every 3 years
I admit, the 70 minutes a day are ME time. I love it. Just me and my satellite radio driving through the mountains with no stop lights. I'd go crazy sitting over 2hours a day in traffic like a lot of folks do. I'm sure there are a lot of people who spend almost a month in their car commuting out of the year. Anyone on this board?
11.6 days just for work. However, I average 30,000 per year. Most shopping, doctors, etc., are 30 mins away. I figure I spend about 28 days in my car per year.
Just over 12 days. This will be the first year i'm forced to take 2.5 weeks of vacation, as I usually only took a day here or there...and would leave work a couple hours early every once in a while for a motorcycle ride home. Either way, 12 days out of the year spent in the car...not to bad, in all honesty, if i had food and facilities, I think i could stay in the car for 12 days right now...lol. Glad I like my car I guess.
Maybe 8 hours a year in the average year, some years less. I don't usually go to work. Still have 3 cars though. Cars and driving are one of my hobbies. Adventuring is another one, and most of my adventures require driving or transporting something, somewhere, so without cars, I'd be pretty much out of that hobby.
In the past I've had both short and long commutes. My last commute was short in terms of distance, but hectic. If I added only 3 miles to the commute each way and took the country roads, there was no traffic. Given the option, I'd much rather spend a longer period of relaxing time in the car rather than a shorter period of time among irritable drivers in congested conditions.
