How much hauling power do you need? I saw a Honda Insight on the road today and thought of you. They are good cars and I had a friend that used it for his medical courier job in CT. He was very pleased that he made extra money by using that car for work.

Honda Fit. That's all there is to it. Fun to drive, seriously good gas mileage (in fact, I bet on the highway, it can perform neck and neck with the Prius, hybrids lose their benefit on the highway), affordable price (try 16 grand new for a fully loaded car with auto [with paddle shifters] transmission!). The only thing really wrong with it is that the interior quality doesn't seem to be quite up to the Honda standard, and it's light weight can make it unstable on the highway.

Honda no longer makes the Insights. I personally have never seen one on the road. Were they only sold in certain states? I know what they look like, but have simply never seen one in person. I don't think Honda sold many of these and a used one would probably be hard to find. I would go with one of Toyota's 3 hybrids ( Highlander Hybrid, Camry Hybrid, or Prius.)

Why get a hybrid when you get a Jetta TDI or a Passat TDI . Get 40+ mpg...with such good gas mileage it offsets the fact diesel costs more and you will still save.
And you won't have to haul around batteries :P

The only problem with the TDIs is the really high maintenance costs. Even an oil change typically costs 2x as much as a regular oil change in a gasoline engine.

Yes, but occasionally one can find them used. All the ones I see on the road are in great shape.
My recommendation to all of my friends is to never buy or lease a new car. It just doesn't make financial sense, unless you can write off the car to your business expenses.

Matrix isn't a bad option, really a Corolla station wagon. Mileage is around 30, with decent hauling capacity too.

The tdi really is fine. I pay about $30 here in NY to get an oil change at the dealer.
