Mine has an arrow next to the pump icon to indicate which side it's on.
I can't think of a single rental car I've had in the last few years that didn't have this. I'm sure it's not universal, but it's definitely common. Very handy. Otherwise, I'm looking for the latch to spring open the hatch on the way in, so that I can see it in my rear view!

This. It's not necessarily the side the pump nozzle is on (I've only ever seen it pictured on the right), but which side the arrow is on - if there is one. And some vehicles are just super helpful and just out right tell you where it is.
Bydand:
A) I am not referring to the gas LIGHT that comes on when you get low, but the actual icon that is always on your dash.
B) I have 3 cars... well had 3 cars... and one of the cars had it on the other side, so yea... occasionally I have to stop and think..... "Am I on the right side???"
I have no arrows.
Yea - unfortunately, its not a universal practice. I guess in your case, you can maybe use something to help indicate - i.e. put one of those non-adhesive window stickers and put it on the corner of the window (i.e. left corner = cap on left and vice versa)...? Or just write a R or L on it and put it on the corner....
My Jetta has no arrow, but the "Gas Pump" icon on the fuel gauge is located on the RH side of the instrument...which corresponds to the placement of the filler neck. I've always wondered if it was done that way on purpose, if so, more power to them...it's a good idea, but I assume the "arrow" takes any of the guess work out of the manufacturers motives.
Someone told me recently that the "Gas Pump" icon on your dashboard is set so that the side of the pump that shows the filler handle piece "points" to the side of the car where the gas door is.
And to my surprise this is true on all my cars.
Coincidence or is this really true? Does your pump icon/light point to the filler door?
I've found it to be true of all the cars I owned unless there was an arrow indicating otherwise. If no arrow, then yep, the side the fuel handle was on was the side the filler neck was on.
This is mentioned in some owner's manuals... Read the owner's manual!
