I've been surfing ebay, and the internet in general looking at cars that I will never be able to afford and I've always wondered what was the benifit/ point of having ram air if the engine also has a tube that sucks in hot air, and duct that sits on top of the exhaust manifold bringing in more hot air.

I think on some of those cars there is a "flap" that closes airflow from the engine compartment when the engine is warmed up.

The air tube brings air heated by the exhaust manifold into the air cleaner on initial startup until the vehicle reaches operating temperature to insure that the choke opens properly. Once it reaches operating temperature, a thermostatically-controlled vacuum switch opens a flap to let the outside air in.
