With my convertible, if the top is up, I leave it unlocked, with a sign that says "Not locked, nothing of value inside." After replacing two tops that were cut through I had enough. You can have my jacket and British flag, just don't make me spent $350, and five hours of my time replacing the top again. Unfortunately it is likely that most thieves who break into a car to steal a jacket and a flag, cannot read. I will p[ut the top up if I am anywhere near a bar becasue drunks seem to like to throw up in convertibles.
I do not think joyriding is that common anymore except where keys are left in the car, or the car is left running. The built in security (locking steering, ignition cut outs, factory alarms) are beyond the ability of most joy riding thieves to get around. Thieves sophisticated enough to get around built in security are going to use a flatbed or even a regular tow truck. The whole "gone in 60 seconds" thing is just for movies.
If I'd be a druggie, I'd target tinted cars for a break-in. Always suspect a stash of something to be behind the tint. As an added bonus, I may find a loaded hand gun in the trap.
Cops have the same attitude when they pull over the dark tinted vehicles. Can't blame them, especially when the windows roll down and the drivers have shades on with smoke billowing out...
Only if you stand next to the car and threaten to hit them with it.
