The worst pedal setup I've ever seen is on our older Thomas school buses. The brake and accelerator are identical "treadle" type pedals. Air brake treadles are common, but these things have an accelerator treadle as well. The accelerator is also air powered as the engine is 40 feet away in the back of the bus.
The newer buses have the usual air brake treadle and a suspended (electric) accelerator pedal...much better.
We have about 300 of these older Thomas buses and hardly a week goes by without somebody hitting the wrong pedal and crashes into something. I've hit the wrong pedal myself a few times, but have been able to recover in time (so far!).
I'll be glad when those damn things are junked in a couple of years!
The Germans like the hinged pedals...VW and Audi both still utilize that design, in addition to the german cars mentioned earlier. It took a bit of an adjustment switching between my firebird and my jetta when i first bought it, but I prefer the jetta...Never had an issue with a floor mat getting jammed under it either like I had with my bird at times...
i voted undecided because i dont care which type is used as long as the pedal works.
Yes, having a working pedal does help!
I've always preferred the hinged at bottom type. I found some, but not all, suspended types to be not as easy to push down, especially after the half-way point.
I do like floor mounted pedals. They seem to be easier on the foot. But in the end it really doesnt matter. All i care about is not havinh throttle by wire.

My father had a '56 VW Beetle that had a bottom-hinged throttle pedal, but instead of a flat pedal, it had a cylindrical roller that the driver's foot pressed against.
I picked undecided - I have cars with both bottom hinge and suspended gas pedals, and it does not make much difference to me. And I can heel and toe with the ones that have stickshifts, with either type pedal.
Which seemed like a good idea, but I found that the reduced contact point wore a hole in my right shoe. And it gave me foot cramps to drive barefoot.
To me, suspended makes more sense, because it puts the linkage up behind the firewall, which is cleaner and less exposed to the elements and foreign matter.
