It's by no-means ideal to overfill the oil pan. But most (all?) engines are designed with a little tolerance for overfilling. Half-quart isn't going to be a problem. 2-3 quarts extra probably would be.
If I put 4.5 quarts in it reads at the low end of safe after an overnight sit. With 5 it's at about 3/4 after sitting overnight.
That's not a problem at all, it's somewhat normal, but unless you're using synthetic oil, you shouldn't be going 5000 miles between oil changes.

Let me tell you a story on how the shampoo companies double sales overnight. They changed their labels to read...shampoo, rinse and repeat.

Incorrect. I have some vehicles where the recommended change interval is 10k, and even 15k. These are the recommendations from the factory that built the car.
There is so much BS in this thread....much of it was once true, but is no longer.
Of course the dealer and the factory is going to tell you that it is normal..... they know the fix is expensive, and if no harm comes to the engine before the warranty is up they are off the hook.
Burning that much oil is probably going to cause long term problems. Fixing it might not be worth the cost, but why should you have to live with it?
I have not owned a car that used oil for maybe 15 years now. Maybe some had leaks, but none burned oil.
But, the size of the engine matters too, a larger engine will use more oil (but not based on the percentage). A blanket statement of 1 quart/1000 miles does not fit every engine. Some engines hold much more oil than others, some do burn more than other engines based on the design.
I'm also really tired of people saying to change the oil every 3000 miles. That depends on the car and it's condition, and the way it is used. I think that in the future we will have our oil tested and only replaced if it actually needs it. Truckers are going 20 to 60 thousand miles, with regular testing and getting 1 million miles out of their engines.
