So I recently got a radar detector for my car (a Cobra). How do these things work? I have it on the dashboard and set it to Highway.

Don't tell me "if it's not a passport/escort, it sucks". I was not going to pay $400. Lol

So yeah, any tips?

Learn how your radar detector works, how far away from the police it picks up etc before you go speeding too much.

With instant on radar your detector is only going to tell you that you are busted, so always have someone in front of you so that they get the police radar and you get the warning.

If the cop is using laser, you will only be notified once he tags you.

If the cop is using radar and there are other cars around, it should pick up when he hits cars in front of you.

If the cop is using radar and you are the only car, you will know only when he tags you.

The above two go for both moving patrol cars and when they are parked with handhelds.

You will have false alarms, learn your detectors, what bands it detects to better help understand what it is telling you.

When you get pulled over, better hide it quick. It's almost a guaranteed speeding ticket if you are stopped for speeding and still have the detector in sight. Some cops will even joke with you while issuing the ticket that the detector did its job!

My best advise though, absolutely do not rely on it. Your eyes are the best detector if you are speeding. I ran many high ends detectors for many years, got more tickets with those then I do now without a detector. Once you start relying on it, you will get popped. Use it as a backup to yourself.

How do they work? They don't unless you have a V1 or an Escort 9500.. By the time a lower model detector goes off, you are all ready caught, plus you have to deal with false alarms

I would learn how the court system works too. Speeders with "radar protectors" frequent the courts all the time.

So what's the biggest difference between these detectors? $400 really?

From the department of redundancy department...

The 9500 and V1 are simply the best. It's been that way for years. Read 100 comparisons, and 97 will back that claim up. The other 3 are simply wrong. I have a 9500 and the range blows away any other detector I've tried. It will also map all the known speed traps in a given area. The V1 has arrows which tell you where the threat is coming from.

What others have said is ture-you need to learn how yours works, what a false looks like, how to tell when the threat is coming up behind you, etc.

Sensitivity, sometimes, 360 degree protection verses 180 or less. Bands, false alarm management, gps on some.

Higher sensitivity and rage is found on higher end models though. I loved my Beltronics STi Magnum. Great range, invisible to radar detector detectors, it was all around great. You just cant get that kind of performance from the cheaper ones.

Bingo. To use a radar detector efficiently, you have to make rabbiting part of your daily habit.

Unfortunately you wasted your money on a Cobra. You didn't want to hear that, but it is true.

The top class of Valentine 1 and top Escort models have twice the range of yours. Where you might get a warning at 1/4 mile, the others warn at 1/2 mile. False alarms won't matter much with yours because it isn't sensitive enough to get false alarms. BEL units are essentially the same as Escort inside but with different packaging and features.

Read the tests at the site below. They are a bit old, but they illustrate the differences. The site below doesn't sell detectors, which is a problem with most radar detector tests on the web.

Radar Detector Tests and Reviews by Guys of LIDAR - LASER

But there is good advice above. The RD is not foolproof, even the best. If you are the only car on the road, or the front car of a group of cars, a cop with instant on radar of any band will get you every time. By the time your detector issues a warning signal the cop already has you and you cannot slow down fast enough.

If a cop is sitting still with his unit turned on sampling traffic (because he is lazy and doesn't want to turn his gun on and off every time he sees a car) a RD with high sensitivity could protect you if you are vigilant and slow down quickly.
