I always back in, and I can do it in 2 seconds, I drove a big box truck for 26 years, backing in a car is nothing to me. Pulling in front first would be no big deal if everyone was driving normal cars but now there are too many SUVs and you can't just look over the trunk lids for oncoming traffic while backing out like it's 1979. I prefer to just go in forward and pull through so there is no backing up at all.
Some of this behavior may be due to me being a fireman, have you ever seen a firetruck pulled into a firehouse foward?
Same for me. After backing fire trucks into the garage time and time again, it almost feels weird to pull forward into a spot.
Angle the mirrors down a little, and you have a perfect view of your surroundings. You can get an inch away from something, but still be perfectly confident that you won't hit it, as opposed to pulling in, where it's more of a guessing game of trying to look over the hood of your car to see if you're going to clear something or not.
I dont usually back into a spot,i just dont see the point, usually i see those backing into spots narrowly miss side swiping adjacent cars and or taking 2-3 tries at accomplishing the move,my thinking is if you cant back out of a spot safely why are you going to all the trouble and risk to other cars backing in to a spot.
ALWAYS back into a parking space. There is no way to see oncoming traffic when you try to back out of a parking space. If people are annoyed that they have to wait 10 seconds while I back in they have larger problems.
It all depends on my needs if I pull in or back out of a parking space. If I need access to my trunk to load or unload items, I am pulling forward. If not, I will sometimes back into the spot.
I agree with the OP. backing in allows you to scope out the spot and traffic. You can then pull out with a better view of traffic. Of course pull thru spots are the best but hard to find. I even back into my driveway.

I was talking to a woman once who complained that the neighbor's bushes didn't let her see oncoming traffic when she was backing out of her driveway. I told her she should just back into her driveway. She looked at me like I had gone crazy, and, in all seriousness, told me she didn't know how to back up. This after telling me she backed out of her driveway.

Yes. When they go forward through the back door. ;-)
So what I do, is try to pull-into a parking-spot...not back into it. This will leave me in a position, where I do not have to
back-up entering or leaving.
