My gf is a secretary at an RV repair place in Houston and makes $12/hr. She had zero experience as a secretary and just writes up order tickets or whatever most the day and surfs the net.

If you can't make $15/hr as a mechanic at ANY level I would find a new career. If you like stuff like that maybe you should consider welding and getting in the oil filed. I went to a tech school for welding and my first job out of school was $20/hr with a guaranteed 56hrs per week, paid vacation, and full health, dental, and vision insurance, matching 401k, etc.

Thread update:

It turn out I was being completely low balled by that dealership. I quit and left and work for a Nissan dealership down in Houston. I make 17$/hr flat rate..and I've already established some side work down here. On a good week I can pull up to 1700$. I'm no longer a C level Tech and I'm a B level technician currently studying to finish all my dealership certs and I'm looking to become a master or gtr certified technician.

Another poster came in this thread and completely misinterpreted this entire thread.

Uniontown PA was a barren wasteland. Although I still managed to make 35K a year with OT on 10.35 averaging 54 hrs a week and sidework it was a economically barren area.

I love Houston. I made many friends here. MANY in the short time I have been here. I have a very nice apartment and I'm getting ready to open up an automotive shop.

Thankyou. I do need to make 150,000 but its not for myself. I care about the money a little but I care more about waking up doing my first love which is automotive performance and auto detailing.

Auto repair is a secondary skill to me because I know its fundamental. I really want an auto performance shop.

My goal of next year is to become an Master elite technician which will put in that range 100K alone without sidework and at least make another 60k from sidework. It will be extremely exhausting especially being part time in college but I know I can pull it off.

I will live kind of poorish but I think I can get started with 250,000$ in the bank. Aside from some essential shop equipment all I need is my tools, knowledge and hands to make someone's car go faster reliably. I fix people's cars now and I can detail the heck out of a car.

Unless the car has body damage or rips in the carpet, I can make it look better then when they first purchased it at the dealership.

I have 10,000$ worth of tools already. I have all my basic too. I'm starting to get luxury tools, more tools for European cars, and some specialty tools. All I need is another 10,000$ in tools.

Your right I have to keep pushing. Here in Houston people care alot about there cars. My shop will have auto detailing for car enthusiast (mostly younger guys in there early 20s early 30s) and for mature folk who just want their car restored. It will also have mod packages..such as turbo kits, suspension systems (struts, engine sway bars, springs etc. etc.) engine rebuilds/tuning, and stuff like a dyno machine . I will also sell and install accessories, sound systems, carbon fiber trunks/hoods, navigational systems, dvd players). Then I will just have the plain auto repair side. People who just want there car fixed. Brakes, no starts which will mostly compromise oem installation parts but without the ridicolous labor charge.

I'm well versed in all aspects I listed above so if I ever make it too the point of hiring specialist in those areas I can actually work with them and communicate with them on their level.
