I'm just wondering, when you pull over to let someone go on a one-lane street, you are supposed to wave to thank the person letting you in, right?
It seems like, nowadays, when I let someone go, or even wave someone on to go, most of the time, all I get is a stare or the driver staring straight ahead.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought this was supposed to be common courtesy!
I always wave when someone pulls over when I'm driving my work truck with a trailer down a side street packed with parked cars (oh the joy of driving a 3/4 ton truck with a 28 ft enclosed trailer around the inner city of Minneapolis!) I've always done it and its 50/50 if I get a wave when I pull over for someone.
Well, there is not such thing as driving etiquette, although it would be nice if such as possible. The best thing to do is to be polite to those who can do the same when the time comes. The rest of the time it's safest to be a defensive driver, and to obey the rules of driving.
I once read a wonderful article about driving etiquette in rural South Dakota. When you meet someone you know coming the opposite way, you wave to them. If you meet them again later on the same day, it is not necessary to wave, unless they have changed clothes, in which case you wave again. There are different waves, depending on whether you take your top hand off the steering wheel to wave, or just raise your fingers as you hold the wheel. The article went on and in in that vein, it was hilarious.
