What do you guys think? I'm looking for a good compact dependable compactish car with good MPG. Anyone have any experience with these cars? Reliability issues I should be aware of?

The Focus will be more fun to drive (better rear suspension setup, better steering/handling, and better performance). The standard Elantra gets slightly better mpg than the standard Focus (28/38 vs. 27/37) although if you get the Focus SFE you will get 40 mpg highway. The interior materials of the Focus are a little better than the Elantra.

It's a close call, but I'd give the nod toward the Focus.

The Focus drives well, but is very unreliable, according to Consumer Reports. The Elantra is reliable, stylish, and a bargain. I would buy a Corolla, or Civic over either of them, though.

A KIA maybe? KIA started making heck of nice cars.
Unless old man Henry resurrected and will turn Ford back to its old glory, I'd stay away from anything with that badge on. Used to be OK to buy some re-badged Mazdas, like Probe or Escort, or Ranger, or Escape, but now that they divorced.... And they will pitch "European design engine) but problem is - none of them European cars are famous for reliability. Folks don't drive a lot there.

Hyundai makes a great car, but I think the Focus is a better "drivers" car. If you want a car you can "enjoy" get the Focus. If you want a car just to get you from place to place, get the Hyundai. You really cant go wrong either way. Like others have said, best way to decide is drive them both, and buy the one you like best

Both are good choices as well as the Toyota that someone metioned.
My vote,
Ford Focus.
But the best advice is go drive them all, drive each car as long as the dealer lets you on a test route that is highway and city.
The car you like the best is the car for you. All are good choices.

I think the Ford Fiesta is the competitor to the Accent.

That's what I would do and if I couldn't decide between the two, I would use them to negotiate against each other at the dealer to get a better deal.

What's the Ford warranty like? I know Hyundai has their 10 year/100,000 mile warranty. Don't overlook Kia, they're basically Hyundai's.
