I was at Enterprise and had a 2013 Impala LT and when I pulled out, I saw them bringing in a 2014 model. I thought GM was not going to make those available as rentals and only the 2013 for the 1st year or 2 of the newer models release.
Hopefully there will be V6 models with 30K for $17-18k next year.

They expected to sell 25% to fleets (which is more than just rentals). You might be able to get one for $24k next year.

Most of those rentals will likely have the base 2.5 4cyl.
Probably, but those cars weren't that great either.
agree with that, I rented a 2013 one in may. 9000 miles on it, showing decent wear for such a low mileage car. Quality, ride and handling, not impressed at all. I'd spend my money elsewhere
In July is had a Malibu rental with the 2.5. Looks similar to the Impala. Seemed underpowered on the Interstate and in the mountains. The gas mileage was about the same as the 3.8's I have had. I thought is was a comfortable ride, but somewhat stiff. The transmission didn't respond once when downshifting in the mountains and I thought it wasn't going to make it. It delayed and coasted and then suddenly shifted. Other: There was not trunk release button inside the car. There is a button on the trunk (exterior). Trunk locks when the car doors lock. I didn't really care for that. The emergency brake was odd. I believe it just had a button and released when in gear.

I know private fleets and owners that easily put 150K+ reliable miles on the outgoing Chevy Impala's, and love them for their longevity and very affordable pricing.
IMO, a lot of rentals come with mediocre-at-best tires. That contributes to the lack of steering/handling.
That said, I've driven at least a handful of rental Malibu's over the last 2-3 years and they didn't really impress me. Although subjective, the exterior is bland and I am not a big fan of the mint-green dashboard interior lighting. The use of mint-green lighting reminds me of vehicle dashboards from the 90's.
