what do you recommend? under 6k...track day/ sunday driver...prefer sports sedan but 2 seater would be fine...
I like rear dive, manual, and German most of all, but would consider an American brand.

been there and done that, buy a used miata. keep it a few years, take care of it and sell it for what you paid for it. then go on to something else you have always wanted.

Shape-wise I'd say the Miata is closer to an old Lotus Elan that doesn't leave puddles in your driveway or threaten an electrical fire every time you turn your back.
Of course being ~1,000 pounds lighter than a Miata does give the Elan redeeming social value.
I am not sure you will find a decent LS1 F- body for 6K and under maybe you might find a 94-97 pretty nice condition LT1 powered 4th Gen F-body though
