Get yourself an LS1 Camaro (1998-2002).

350HP V8 stock, 3,400 lb car with a small backseat, hatchback, 18city/28highway mileage. Hits 60 in about 5 seconds, 1/4 mile in the low 13's.

One more vote for the Miata here.

If you're worried about it's girly image or it being too slow, then look into this:

Flyin' Miata : V8 conversions : Turnkeys and tradeins

Not for $6k unless its been totally beat-to-hell. LT1's can be had.

thanks!
been there and done that, buy a used miata. keep it a few years, take care of it and sell it for what you paid for it. then go on to something else you have always wanted.

Again it goes back the the thoughts that everyone thinks they drive 9/10s and needs RWD only to get their butts handed to them in a Integra GSR.

Find a 96-00 Civic with forced induction. Front wheel drive though, sorry! But for 5k you could find a rice rocket.

Shape-wise I'd say the Miata is closer to an old Lotus Elan that doesn't leave puddles in your driveway or threaten an electrical fire every time you turn your back.

Of course being ~1,000 pounds lighter than a Miata does give the Elan redeeming social value.

I am not sure you will find a decent LS1 F- body for 6K and under maybe you might find a 94-97 pretty nice condition LT1 powered 4th Gen F-body though
