Sun: I think it would have to be under 20K And I'd have to get some kind of warranty. Upon further research, the car was not truely "under book" KBB placed the value right about what they were asking, and I have found that KBB is a bit over zealous in their valuations. Really, it's impossible for those online sites to place an accurate value on a car like that as there cannot be much if any sales data they could gather about actual sales of 2006 model's with 86,000 miles on it. I think the car would depreciate WAY to much in the next 3 years, and at that time I would want a new one, but would be stuck in a car that was very upside down.

The deciding factor for me was that it was more car than I needed, and lower mileage cars that were more suited to me were not THAT much more expensive.

sunspirit, yeah, its a price/value comparison that i am considering. think of this: 2 2006 G35 are for sale, say they are both base model sedans. one's got 30K, the typical mileage, and edmunds says it should be priced at $26K at the dealer's lot. the other has 90K and edmunds says it should be priced at $24K.

so is $2K really enough cost savings to justify buying a car that has triple the useage, in this case 60K more miles? like i said you're likely to spend $2K repairing the a/c and a couple of other tidbits soon enough. now you are in the high mileage car for the same dollar amount. when you are ready to sell you've got 130K on it or more while the other one would probably have 60K. good luck getting a good price for it on your own, and you'll need even better luck to get a good trade in value. what dealer is going to give you top dollar for a 5 year old 130K mile luxury car. they know they cant get it financed and they wont get much for it at auction. the 60K car might get $14K trade in, the 130K car'd be lucky to get $9K. now you lost $5K towards your next car.

look i like old cars, i've had a few high mileage cars that i took pride in keeping in top form. the VQ is a terrific engine, its actually one of my favorites. but this isn't that kind of car. its not a project car, a classic car, or a cheap one for your kid. its a DD. mileage is a big consideration cause you're just going to sell it in a couple years anyhow, and when you do, well, most people are going to expect typical 5 year old G35 money for it and get pretty pissed when they can't get it. if this car was priced under $19-20K it might be worth a consideration. but the OP hasn't told us what they're asking for it.
More importantly many fleet vehicle (police, taxi etc) have engine hour meters on them. Often times a vehicle may not have a lot of miles, but do have a large amount of hours. I know the department I worked for tried to rotate vehicles out by 100K miles. I remember having a conversation with the automotive supervisor and recall him saying that the cars with 100K on the odometer have what would be more like (200K ?) when you look at the hour meter.
By the way has anyone asked or has the O.P. said how many miles they put on a car in an average year? If the person dosen't put high miles on the car the 89K would balance out after a few years. My wife puts about 4K a year on her car so when we buy her a new car we usually buy at the begining of the model year. When I was working I could put in excess of 35K on my vehicle so when I bought new it was usually at the end of the model year or as a leftover.

Uhm.... I posted that over four years ago when the car was only 2 model years old. Does that fact change your math a little?
