I'm willing to bet you'll get a sizable minority if you ask on the Oregon forums.. it's illegal to pump your own gas there. I think a few other states also disallow customers from pumping their own gas.
New Jersey is another state where people aren't supposed to do it themselves. I live right across the river from Portland and get a laugh at the people who stand next to the pump with the expectation of having somebody else do it for them.
Wow, I didn't know that. Very strange. Why is that?
I live in Washington but drive to Oregon pretty frequently. The argument there is it provides jobs. They don't like it if you try to pump your own gas there. I imagine some Oregonians don't know how to pump gas as I believe that has been the law there since the 1950s.
Oregon did have a state referendum a few years ago to allow self service gas stations , however it only got 48% of the vote as I recall. So for now, a majority still support the ban on self-service.

Well I'd assume that most people in Oregon and NJ leave the state occasionally so it's probably a small percentage of those folks (and then, paradoxically, younger drivers) who actually don't know how to pump gas.
Although now that I think about it, on brutally cold, windy Michigan winter days I'd be all over having someone else pump my gas for me. But I'd also feel sorry for the poor gas station attendants in winter. I don't imagine it pays very well.

I was pumping my own gas in Singapore last week, (home of the NO Chewing Gum state, and NO Frisbees in the Park...) But flying back to Portland, OR (liberal enclave of the left coast), I am not qualified to pump gas and often get CANED for pumping my own diesel (which is legal, contrary to the 'informed' pump jockeys in Oregon.)
Life in the hands of the government.... Heathcare is gonna be really fun when the TRUE costs trickle down to the grunts who have to PAY. (Can't get ACA policies in Oregon either )
My niece and I just flew out to visit a sick relative in Illinois. We paid the rental car agency in advance for a tank of gas so we wouldn't have to try to pump our own before returning it!
Do you know how to use a rotary phone?
I would be embarrassed to be you. It is pathetic to pay a rental car company ahead of time for gas just to avoid self serve gas.

I lived in Oregon for a couple of years. Imagine my shock when I got chewed out for pumping my own gas when we first moved there. I too was told over the time I lived there that it was because 'jobs'. Jobs, huh? In that case, remove the traffic lights and put traffic cops there. Jobs. Make it illegal to do your own yard work. Jobs. Make it illegal to wipe your own arse. Jobs.
I loved living there, but I don't miss the 'nanny state' aspects of that place.

Well, that is a rude response that I see no reason for.
Besides, I can see doing that even for those who do pump their own gas normally. Picking up a rental car with a full tank of gas is like checking into a hotel room with the towels already in the room.
