Well you are out west and that probably still is a common practice. When I lived in Idaho, it was common to drive as fast as the car would go, both day and night, even in jack rabbit season.
Today, I live in Ohio and try to drive at or below the speed limit. Not just because of tickets, tho in most areas around me, there is zero enforcement.
In my county there is less than 15000 people and shrinking. That population averages one traffic related death a week and more. Many of those are single car related, usually from running off the road. Every week there is probably two or so ambulance runs going by my house to the south where many people crash coming around a long radius curve. Speed of up to 100 MPH are not uncommon. But it is foolish, the roads are not built for that sort of affair, speeding at night is a type of suicide. Alcohol and speed around here are deadly. Lots of multiple deaths in single car crashes involving young drivers who have been drinking.
Lots of stories by the locals of "Their Crash" and how they survived it.
Auto body repair and the funeral business is prime. Maybe repair is the wrong word, a lot of the crashes it is just scoop up all the pieces and haul it away.

I think speed limits are somewhat useless because it seems on any highway most people do 65-80. But the sign says 55. But if you go that slow you're not going with the flow of traffic & that's dangerous.
1) you could get rear ended
2) you could be in front of ME!!!
My normal speed is 70-75. (on the highway, obviously!!! )

The speed limit here is 65 and I usually drive 75, 80 if in a hurry. Going down towards San Diego where the speed limit is 70, if you are going 90 in the fast you will get run over. I used to drive at least 90 all the time. Getting old and having children made me come to my senses. My 4runner is the first car I have owned that I haven't tapped the speedometer out in.

I try my best to honor the speed limit, no matter what my thoughts are on it. I know that the signs are not a suggestion, but those who placed them had reasons.
I drove truck cross country with my husband for years, I've seen what speed can do in the wrong situation

I thought MT highways didn't have speed limits (that's my kind of place ). I usually go 5 to 10 miles over on the highway (maybe a little more if it's a fairly empty highway and I know the road really well).
Maybe just a teensy bit over on regular roads if they're main streets, not on residential streets though. Unfortunately normal drivers have to go faster than the speed limit as to encourage the idiots on the road to do at least the speed limit so we get a normal flow of traffic. If the slow people did the speed limit, there'd be fewer fast people and we'd all kind of even out (plus you know you always look like you're going faster when you're next to someone slower....yes, I totally justify my NJ driving and blame the slow pokes....mostly you left-lane NYer's. )

Ps. I also believe that once you hit a certain age (not sure what age I'd make it though) you should have to go for an actual driving test (road test, not written) once a year to determine if you're a hazard on the road. Too many elderly that can't see over the steering wheel on the roads now-a-days.

In town I go the speed limit. On the freeway, which is 65 or 70, I go 70 or so. It depends on how fast everyone else is going. I don't want to be going super slow compared to everyone else since that isn't safe either.

Most definitely! I would also add extremely overweight people too. I see some people driving that are so fat that the steering wheel is wedged in their chest. If they had to make a sudden turn I doubt that they could.
