Motorists caught speeding to grandma’s house in Melbourne were greeted with a bittersweet Christmas Day surprise as officers doled out warnings and tickets alongside scratch-off lottery games.

Watch the video: Melbourne police issue lottery tickets during traffic stops.

So they're rewarding bad driving. Nice.

If they want to spread holiday cheer, tell them to slow down and issue a verbal-only warning.

What are the odds that you’ll get pulled over for speeding and get issued a lottery ticket? Probably low enough to make you feel pretty good about winning the lottery!

Every so often police come up with these bonehead programs that they think will make people like them better. Years ago in, I think, Orlando, the police started stopping people who were driving safely and issuing them some sort of certificate to thank them. It totally backfired because, for ANY reason, people do not want to see flashing red lights behind them. The public outcry was so great they stopped that program fast.

We really only want out police to do the jobs we hire them for, work to keep law and order, and help us when we need help. These "cutesy" little ideas they come up with are really lame. Don't waste our money and time on lotto tickets, go out and arrest a few thugs and drug dealers instead.

As a teacher and parent I reward behaviors that I want to reinforce. How about giving the lottery tickets to drivers that are observed doing something correctly? "Sir, I noticed you made a complete stop at that stop sign. Here's a lottery ticket."
