I just renewed my Ohio License Plates for 2 years for $135.50. This was for a 2014 non-commercial pickup truck. I like to buy new plates when I buy a new vehicle. Ohio does not require you to buy new plates as long as the old plates are in good condition. Also, automobile plates are cheaper than pickup truck plates.
Since I do not live in one of the 7 Cleveland-area E-Check counties, there is no emission check. Ohio does not require vehicle inspection, either. License plate renewal cost is not based on vehicle weight or value.
When I renew again in 2 years, I will also renew my Driver's License at the same time and location.
Can any other state match this price and convenience?
Texas regular plates are about $65, and emissions/ safety inspection is about $40. When I started driving,(1981) the plates were $15.90 and safety was like $12. But one of our democrat legislatures & governors tripled the plate fee. Really hit a 16 yr old student in the wallet, and I never forgot it.

Yeah, the voters really jabbed us WA 'econo' drivers when they voted the $35 annual fee. I used to get by on $25 for my $35 auction cars. NO proof of insurance is required to get plates in WA (but IS required if you get stopped).
so... to fight back I now just pay the $45 one time fee for 'Collector' plates ( no renewal required in WA) (yet... that is subject to change)
IIRC you can still get 2 yrs for under $50 in Oregon. Auction cars with 2 yr plates go for extra premium in OR ($100+) b'cuz proof of insurance IS required to get tabs in OR.
MT (no sales tax) is cheap as well AFAIK. Many RV folks license their vehicles as owned by a MT LLC.
In MN we call them tabs and we have to renew them each year. The renewal rate is maybe around 1% of the cars value up until vehicle is maybe 10 years old then it's $42 then on.
Registration $36 annual fee to state, up from $24 not that long ago (10 years or less)
That's it. All it takes for plates.
Of course there are other things to do. There's an annual safety inspection and in some counties emissions inspection. But they are separate, not tied to plate. You get a windshield sticker. Price is set by the shops. Safety you might get by with 20 bucks.
So around $50 or so minimum annually (and closer to $100 realistically if you need emission test) to run the car in PA given those regulations, but the plate is $36 and $36 alone. No annual taxes either.
