Should I feel guilty because I have not one but two pickups?

Nahhh.

My decision to purchase a truck is not emotional. It's rational. I've attempted to go without a truck a few times in my life and never lasted more than 6-8 months. For some people they are practical such as myself.

I use it a few times per month. Here's how it breaks down for me. (Bear with me here) (Also factor in that I drive 300 miles per week for work)

Let's assume I only use it 4 times in a month. 2 trips to Lowes, 2 to other places such as a local garden center, or to pick up something like a mattress.

Lowes no longer offers truck rental in Alabama. So I have to go rent a truck from somewhere like Uhaul. $19.99 per day, plus $.49 per mile and fuel cost. It's 5 miles from my house to Uhaul. Then another 10 miles from Uhaul to Lowes. 15 miles from Lowes to my home. So total mileage will be 30 miles round trip to get what I need. $14.70 mileage fee + $19.99 rental fee. $34.69 so far. Let's assume 15mpg in the rental truck so add another $7.18 in fuel (assuming $3.59/gal).

That one trip to Lowe's just cost me $42.58...... If I had driven in my 13.5 mpg Titan straight to Lowe's and back, I would have spent $7.89 in gas and been home 2 hours sooner if not doing paperwork to rent the truck and return it.

Now let's assume I own a Civic or Camry that gets 24 mpg. I drive 60 miles per day to work. I would burn 12.5 gallons of fuel per week, or $44.88. Assuming I rent a truck once per week (4 trips in a month average), add another $42.58. That's $87.46 per week. Total cost for me to own the fuel saver for the month? $349.84 and roughly 6-8 hrs lost for renting, returning, etc..

Total cost for me to drive my gas guzzler per week? $79.77 per month? $319.08 and no time wasted looking for a rental. THERE'S your fiscal wisdom.
Really?

How much additional money did you spend to acquire your Titan, pay for its registration, insurance, and regular maintenance?

In your situation, it may be cost-effective and practical but even if it's just sitting in your driveway, it's still costing you much more than the $7.98 a trip you believe it's costing you.

That's the point I'm trying to get through to you.

Please think about it.

None of your business, in case you needed to be reminded of.

Are YOU paying for it? He knows that already. And when are you selling your house and move into that studio? You don't NEED all that square footage. And about the electricity you are using.... Report back. I want to make sure you really need all that you are using.

One thing to consider is how high the price of pickups has climbed (35346356x more features). 20-30 years ago, people would buy a truck and a car. Now they can only afford one, and if they need the utility, it's going to be a truck.

Phlinak, what about my babies' car seats?
And my four dogs? And my parents?
How do we all go on a road trip?
Or to the airport?

I can't put 2 car seats in my SL550.
That's illegal! So you want me to buy another car (sedan) for my babies and then rent an SUV every time I have to
-go on a road trip
-go to work in bad weather
-take our bikes/scooters/dogs to the park
-go to Home Depot
-etc

Please help me with all your wisdom!
