I would agree on this one. Normally, I think I get better MPG with no A/C and that is why I try to use the vent setting without the compressor going as much as possible. That way , I can keep the windows up and not wear out the window motor. However, on the freeway, windows up and turn on the compressor. It needs to be used to keep it in working order , even in the winter. BTW, we are mostly dry climate.
If it was a short distance like that than I would pull the windows down to let the air out. If it were longer I would defiantly open up the windows first, then put the AC on (but at a low setting) and recycle the air so I don't waste too much gas.
I don't roll my window up and down since that wears out the motor.
That's the most insane thing I have ever read. Using your logic, you should never drive the car, because that wears out the brakes and tires. Or you should never walk because that wears out your shoes.
on short distantances(3 miles or less), which would you choose? If you choose air conditioner then how do turn it on and off without wearing it out faster?
i usually use window.
80 is not a very hot day, but I would use the AC, since I hate having my windows down. Keep the dust out.
I turn it on when the car is idling, never at full speed. Turn it off when it gets too chilly and at any speed.

The OP stated that using the AC "wears it out faster" so I assumed the same could be said of the window motor or crank.
Windows down always. My system leaked years ago, it will take a charge though so I know it worked, and well. But I so rarely used it that I didn't ever bother getting it fixed, just not worth it to me. And yes, it gets hot and sticky here.
It depends a little on how long my hair is. When it is so long the wind whips it in my face I use the AC exclusively. If it's short I go with windows, unless it's really hot, then AC.
Sometimes both.
It also depends on if I'm jamming good music. Sometimes I want to share, other times I don't.
I just let the climate control do its thing usually.
