Default Registering a New Vehicle

I just bought my car off lease. I have been leasing it since 2004 and since the lease is now up and I love the car, I purchased it. I just renewed my plates/registration/etc a couple months ago as well.

Now that I have purchased the car, since technically its a new car to me (even though I've had it for the past few years) I have to register it and get new plates. I am wondering what would happen if I don't register it until they're due again to be renewed. The registration (from it being my leased car) is still in my name, etc.

I am planning a move next summer, before the plates would be up for renewal again. What if I were to just wait until then?

Differs from state to state. No answer you get here will likely be accurate unless that is known. Probably would get better results posting this in your state forum.
