Zip cars sound great, but they are not available in my area. I would probably have to drive to another state just to pick one up. I live in Mobile, AL, and I don't know how practical they would be if I had to drive a few hundred miles to rent one. I think this rideshare I have with my friends is the closest thing I have to a zip car right now, but I would like to suggest that someone start a zip car sharing site in my area.
I think at some point your friends' willingness to give you rides will run out, and then you'll have to solve the transportation problem.
There are some bike paths and trails in Mobile http://www.mobileunited.org/images/t...obile_Area.pdf Maybe those, along with the bus, would be the solution you're looking for. Do the buses there have bike racks so you can ride to a bus stop and then put your bike on the bus? A bike can be pretty useful...you can put a rack on the back and then use it to bring your groceries home. It's also easier to ride a bike in hot weather than to walk, because the wind hits your sweat and cools you off.
Bikes are mainly for recreational purposes around here; I wouldn't trust myself on some of the so-called "bike trails," which are actually just widened sidewalks, but something like a bicycle does sound like the best option, and, really, I'm willing to ditch the cars altogether for a while. I really see little need for one here in town; they're expensive, drink gas, and can be a major liability. I think my next motor powered mode of transportation should be something like a bicycle but capable of keeping up with light traffic, maybe a scooter or moped, but I haven't been able to pass my motorcycle license exam, though, for one thing, even though I don't want to ride a full motorcycle, as that would probably be scary. I just want to ride a little scooter that probably goes no more than 35-40 miles per hour. I need to stay away from highways, though, because a scooter and a Mack truck probably won't mix very well. I think I need to do more research.
