Should the left lane be for passing in all circumstances if safely to do so? (2009, toll)

Let's have a poll. I am so sick of those left lane hogs doing the speed limit or two under and they won't get out of the way. I don't care if you are doing 75 in a 55 on the tollway, if someone wants to go faster and you can safely change lanes, GET OUT OF THE WAY!!!
Not necessarily. I find that on some interstate highways, the right lane is in worse shape and so I ride in the left lane for a smoother ride. But, (and it's a BIG but..) I always keep my eye in the mirror and if somebody is gaining on me, I'll pull to the right to let them pass.

I do believe in "slower traffic keep right."
This is my attitude as well. I see no point in leaving one lane unused except for passing.

Depends on the state and, in some states, which highways you are on in the state and even which section of the highway you are on. Not to mention traffic or lack thereof. So neither of the poll options can possibly be accurate in real life.
And, CoastalMaineiac, you're right, and also another, "I wanna drive really really fast over the limit and mean people get in my way and it's illegal for them to do that!" thread.
The law in California is to get out of the way to faster moving traffic. You can drive in the left lane all you want in California but are supposed to yield to faster moving traffic. I normally stay in the left lane. I prefer to hug the wall. The wall is one thing that will not come out and hit me. When someone is driving faster than I am driving I will move over for them. You do have to plan your drives and watch the other lanes of traffic though. I hate it when someone is in the left lane and has to cross 3 or 4 lanes of traffic because they want to merge on to another freeway.
