I know that they've sold around 800,000 Citation's in the 1980 model year, I was really surprised that it was the Chevy Citation that holds the record for most units sold in one model year instead of the Toyota Camry or the Honda Accord/Civic.
The 1980 X bodies including the Citation were released ca. March 1979 so they had an extended model year.
Note too that the 1965 Chevrolet Impala sold well over 1 million copies by itself.........and, that may not have included the Biscayne, Belair, or Caprice either----------all were built on the Chevrolet/Canadian Pontiac version of the GM corporate B body platform.

Reason: Clarification
They're scarce because they were cheap pieces of **** designed to replace the beloved Nova which was much better built, worth more, lasted longer and still had a dash of the old school.
Thus being built cheap as they were they didn't last long. Same goes for the Chevy Vega, Chevette, Celebrity, Ford Pinto, Tempo, Topaz, AMC Gremlin....
And yes the 1980 Citation was GM's first attempt into the FWD market.
I know of a guy that had an '81 Citation about 10 + years ago, had the crap 2.8 liter V6 in it....car had some balls for a 110 hp anemic boat anchor.
Actually; many a Gremlin lasted well in excess of 100K miles------they were a short version of the Hornet/Javelin platform.
As for the Citation; the 1984-85 models with the fuel injected V6 were not a bad car---------just that the model's reputation was ruined by then hence it going away.
Remember too that the 1982-96 Cutlass Ciera, Century, Celebrity, etc were essentially restyled 1982+ Citations, etc. chassis wise.
I remember them, lol the X-11 with its cheap plastic fake air intakes on the side, offered in a 2.5 4 cylinder and 2.8 6 cylinder versions, I think most of them were crushed by the time they had 100,000 miles on them, in Florida the sun usually buckled the dash before they had 20,000 miles.
Really crappy. I drove one in drivers ed. When doing a 3-point turn practice - invariable, if you had the AC on, it would stall out. We had to turn the AC off to make sharp turns. And the cheapest interior, I don't know if they all were that cheap. This one was.
I see a few of them here and there still in Vegas, but I think a lot of people would not be able to tell you the name of that vehicle. The Citation and Celebrity both are sort of obscure strange cars that dont really have much character, so no one pays much mind to them.
