What does your owner's manual say? That is WAY more important than some Jiffy Lube's idea of when. Every 3,000 miles is a scam! Yep, it really is. There are cars that require changes at 12K. I don't think there is a car out there that states 3K anymore. Not even a Chevy.

This is almost an opinion-based question, but I have pretty much always gone 4-5k miles between changes. My driving mixes between longish highway trips, and short hard driving around town. With my 05 BMW 325, 5k is kind of my number. I know they say you can go longer, and I do use part-syn oil, but it's awfully hot down here in Birmingham, and I drive "spirited".

I change the oil in my Titan @ 4k miles. I could probably go longer but I can afford to change it (and I do it myself) and this gives me peace of mind. We changed the wife's Camry @ 5k per the owner manual.

I've gone 3X futher than the recommended change (after the warranty period expired). Never had engine problems even at 170k BUT I'm also in a position to immediately get a new vehicle if I did begin having problems. Also I've only done this on Japanese engines.
A few thousand extra miles between changes probably isn't going to cause problems in an engine that is running well at the proper temp.

As others have said much of this is marketing...OFCOURSE those guys want to see you back for another oil change in 3k rather than 9. And the manufactures make bank selling more of their product.

Just like the industry I work in, a lot of the suggestions are no longer applicable in this day and age but no one is rushing in to ammend anything that will effect their bottomline.

From the 2012 Corolla maintenance manual - available online:

http://www.toyota.com/t3Portal/docum...orolla_WMG.pdf

And owner's manual:
http://www.toyota.com/owners/web/pag...Owners-Manuals

Every 5,000 miles or 6 months- change oil and filter if driven in these conditions

Driving on dirt roads or dusty roads
Driving while towing, using a car-top carrier, or heavy vehicle loading
Repeated trips of less than five miles in temperatures below 32F / 0C
Extensive idling and/or low speed driving for a long distance such as police, taxi or door-to-door delivery use

Otherwise change oil and filter every 10,000 miles or 12 months.

If 0W-20 oil WAS NOT used at the last oil change, replace engine oil and oil filter every 5,000 miles or 6 months.

I would certainly say you are safe to extend the intervals to 5,000 miles or even longer if you don't experience the listed conditions, especially using synthetic oil. I change our Vibe's oil (same 1.8L basic motor as the Corolla on our base Vibe, and on my GT, the 2.4L Camry motor) every 5,000 miles on regular oil or up to 10,000 using full synthetic.

How long did your engine make it before that happened? 25K miles maybe?

I'm sure with synthetic oil cars will easily do 10K between oil changes.
