Im talking specifically about using synthetic oil. Just a curious question. I know the regular oil they tell you to change it at 3k miles but im pretty sure its ok to go to 4 or even 5k miles, yes?

SO im wondering about synthetic oil in my 2012 corolla and how many miles is "safe" to go over without changing it

Depends on many factors....

Oil pan capacity, operating conditions, temperature, filter efficiency, engine mechanical condition, etc etc. No one answer for everyone or every car. Use the manufacturer's recommendations as a starting point

What you can do is submit a sample to blackstone labs which will tell you just how your engine is wearing and at what rate and they can propose a recommended oil change interval.

http://www.blackstone-labs.com/

Even conventional oils can go beyond 3K miles. That is more of a marketing thing really. Synthetic oils can go much further and with cars with larger oil pans (7-10 qts) the interval can even be 10-15K miles for the manufacturers recommendation.

If you wanted a short, simple answer, yes, you can go 5K on synthetic oil. Just make sure to check the oil level and confirm the engine isn't using any oil and add if necessary.

Do what ever your owners manual says. I would wager its in the 5-7500 range. The service interval on my 2013 GTI is 10,000 miles. If you change it any more then the manufacture recommends you are just throwing away money

The suggested oil change intervals are there for a reason. You can quickly void a warranty if you were to develop engine trouble down the road and you can't prove the engine was serviced on time. Quick lube places will tell you 3k miles, however you should follow the service intervals listed in your owner's manual.

Our 2014 Toyota Venza is full synthetic but the service intervals are 5k miles on it.

If you're out of warranty you can probably stretch it a little further if you have an oil analysis performed.

I've always changed oil once a year regardless of miles... the only time I even think about it if I get over 10-12K miles before the time comes up. Never had a lubrication related issue.

You can go until your engine seizes up. How many miles that may end up to be is up for debate.

I'd hate to see the inside of your engine.

Oil breaks down over time and loses it's viscosity. It won't allow proper lubrication of your engine internals. You may not have an issue yet, but you will severely shorten the life expectancy of that engine.

There is no such thing as who long you can go between oil changes and be "safe". You can go as long as it takes for your engine to fail, not one minute longer.

Read your owner's manual and follow it. That way if something goes wrong you don't have to make up excuses about why you didn't change your oil as prescribed.

It is the same thing as asking how long you can engage in sex before putting on a condom.

I wouldn't go any further than what the oil & filter are rated for. On ordinary dino with just a fram filter, 3,000 should be your limit. On high end synthetic like Amsoil & something like a Mobil 1 filter you can go 10-12,000 just fine.

didn't bmw recommend 15k miles of oil change? Then they said 10k miles after 2014 models. The same with Benz and many other cars that uses synthetic
