So I got this old truck. Typical parking lot scrapes and dents. Clear coat peeling on bed and tailgate and some light rust. I can take care of the body work. The paint job is in good shape for 25 year old truck
To have it all done paint and body work I got quotes anywhere from 2000 to 3500
I can also do the body work and plasticoat it.
Or I can do a spray bomb flat paint job.
Or take care of the surface rust spots and call it a day.
I was thinking the plastidip simply because I can peel it off if I ever want to really paint it or change colors. I was thinking flat desert tan. Its a old truck I just want to keep it going as a commuter work truck.
A job worth doing is worth doing right! Honestly though, that's quite a bit of coin unless you plan on keeping it another 10 plus years. I wouldn't do it any other way, but correctly.

A plastidip kit is gonna run about 450 to my house with enough material to do two trucks.
I plan on keeping the car for as long as possible. I toyed with the idea of doing a compete resto but decided I just want to drive it to and from work. It's basically a well running mileage collector. Far easier to rack up the miles on this truck than to buy a new one for 25k. When the motor if trans go I'm just gonna build a 300-320 hp smog legal motor. I just don't like the way it looks with the peeling clear. The plasti dip is simply to give it a uniform color. I can eventually paint it but right now I just want it to look all one color.
The plasti dip is easily removable for when/if I do want to get it painted. Even a basic Maaco paint job is gonna run me 12-1400.
I'm just trying to justify the cost of the paint. Right now I can't. Maybe later I can.
since it's an old truck I would recommend just fixing the rust or maybe doing the plastidip unless you want to turn it into a show truck
Its never gonna be a show truck. I put about 2500 maybe as high as 3k miles a month. Its simply there to get me to work and rack miles. Even though everything works ( and I just rebuilt the whole front end) I just don't want it looking like a hooptie. And the cheapest alternative is plastidip. I can krylon spray bomb it but that just looks bad because its hard to do big surfaces like cars without showing spray lines. Maybe I'll get a hood from the junkyard to practice on
If you're inclined to DIY, I'd say plasti dip is worth a shot. Might be a fun little project and for a few hundred bucks it's really just the time that you're investing.
