I wouldn't be surprised this is done to increase productivity at the plant. This way, the vehicle can just be flagged as 'package 2' and quickly, everyone on the line would know exactly what goes in the car. With custom orders, this might not be that easy since most of the work isn't done by hand anymore.

Oh yeah, its clearly cheaper for the manufacturer....they build most cars one way and you pay a premium if you want certain "package" options.

The salesman had a couple of memorable lines:

1. "They only come one way"...he kept repeating (unless you buy one of the optional packages).

2. B.A.S.E.= BASICALLY ALL STANDARD EQUIPMENT.

That's why I had such a hard time finding a stick shift.
