Thanks for all the feedback. Wife wants to test drive a Nissan Versa. I sat in the new version and it screamed "cheap, cheap, cheap." then again it IS cheap$. Also questioned crash worthiness and survivability compared to an Imprezza or Forrester or Golf.
Update: Wife likes body style of previous generation Nissan Versa (2012 and prior) and body style of Elantra Touring (2012 and prior). I also want her to look at Mazda 3 again.
Any thoughts or info on the newest candidates?
Buy a new generation Golf. Seriously. They are head and shoulders above the old generation. Test drive the GTI too, you owe it to yourself.
They aren't as unreliable as you think. I haven't heard of a single major catastrophe from the latest generation and I frequent the golf forums a lot.
I did read that over in Europe (where this new golf has been out for over a year), warranty claims are much lower then the previous generation.
Have you and your wife gone and sat in a new gen golf? The golfs are just starting to show up in dealerships, the GTI's are already out. I can tell you that no other car in the class comes even close in interior quality/refinement. It truly feels like an Audi. The seats are out of this world, at least the ones in the GTI. So comfortable and supportive.
Oh and also the GTI leads its class in safety as well.
I believe that the base golf doesn't get the DSG tranny, which is the best dual clutch automated manual around. It's the same basic box that goes in all audi's and porsches. GTI gets it though. GTI also gets the 2.0T motor which is fantastic, and also can be found in lots of Audi's. Basically, it's worth the extra money.
the vw golf is made in mexico not in Germany any longer. no thanks as well as the jetta
They are made in a brand new state of the art billion dollar plant. Who cares where it's located. As soon as I sat in a new MKVII GTI I could tell the fit and finish is way beyond my MKVI, which was made in Germany. All the buttons and fittings are more solid, the whole thing felt better put together.
