Wow. Bunch of old guys making broad generalizations about a culture they have no idea about.
Whoooda thunkit?!!
Couldn't agree with you more. If I learned anything in this thread its that a bunch of people make various generalizations that few other people seem to agree with. So we end up with ten generalizations with no consensus which generally indicates that they are all wrong.
Nothing will ever replace these true classic street racers. No matter how hard they try to. I had a 1964 Dodge Polara with a big block 318 push button automatic transmission on the left side of the dashboard.

It's pretty simple guys....the civics etc. cost more. You can get a later model kia etc. for very cheap.
Since the dawn of the automobile...young guys buy the cheapest crap they can find because it's what they can afford...then modify it or at least drive it like a maniac are the norm. <shrug>

I'm guessing it is a matter of perspective.
If it is meant to blow the doors off the 'competition' at a stop light, it better have a monstrous V-8 under the hood, shake the ground at idle, hurt the ears (and not like a bunch of bees!) when it winds up, leave 50 feet of black rubber on liftoff, shift at 50-60 from first gear, and leave rubber in each successive gear up to fourth or fifth.
I am not aware of anything which Honda, Kia, Toyota or any of those other things ending in a beer can which can meet those criteria. I sort of chuckle when one these little bugs pulls up to a light, speakers thumping like a thunderstorm, and the Ford Focus beside them leads them away with hardly a sigh.
Muscle, is muscle, kids. It is not a twink on steroids pretending to have muscle. If the ground ain't shakin', what's under the hood ain't bakin'.
Now...if it handles with no roll as you slalom through the corners at 100 or more, i'll take a look.....

That's the part that blows my mind anymore.
The horsepower increases over the last 20 years or so have been such that the speeds today get so fast, so quick that it's just too dang dangerous to fudge around in town like that.
I'm not talking about the top end guys back in the day that would tool around on Friday nights with what was essentially a 1/4 mile car but more the run of the mill guys you'd see cruising in their commute car.
Just basic mustangs and comaro's have HUGE horsepower increases as a point of reference.
Even my highlander of today would be a match for my highschool buddies 5.0 mustang from the 1980's.
Occasionally I see youtube vids of guys ripping into it in 45mph type zoned areas with >500hp cars and it's like....wth....within 2 blocks they're already going insanely fast.

Polara with 318 BB and push button shifter? Muscle car?
318 is as small block as you want to get. Google it; I don't have to.
That tranny isn't muscle car material at all.
A lot of the cars you listed don't touch muscle car.
Most Chevys better have SS after the name if it is a factory muscle car. Either that or have COPO, Yenko or Motion somewhere in there. A lot of family cars were turned into street cars as it was easy to do if you could get parts. It use to be relatively inexpensie to build an engine up from a block but those days are gone. Lots of people opt for crate engines and tune those up a little.
To the point of an FRS for those who dis a true sports car:
I had an extended 'race' over about 100 miles of winding back country roads years ago. Over 100 miles my buddy could not shake me, for every straightaway that he'd blow me away on, there were enough curves that I'd be riding the bumper of his newish, at the time, 5.7L V-8 transam. He just could not shake my stock, new, 1992 1.8L Mazda Protege I-4. I'd watch is rear wheels hop all over the pavement as he struggled to control it around a corner that my little econbox sailed through without fuss.
I never forgot that lesson and I bet he hasn't either. So, while I'm not sure I'd take the Kia over a muscle car, I do enjoy my stock 290hp Maxima!

Except that advancements in auto technology pretty much erase that disparity. I guarantee my SHO walks a Mazda3 (to compare to the Protege) 6 ways from Sunday over 100 mile winding road. I'd even say the same about the wife's Camaro RS (V6)
