So to make a long story short... I came to Virginia in November 2013 and bought a car from a dealership here in December. I am from Montana and registered it in Montana (where there is no sales tax) and have the car insured in Montana as well. One thing has led to another, and I'm going to be staying in for Virginia for a bit longer than I expected. My questions are..
1. Is it illegal for me to be driving with Montana plates and insurance if Ive here longer than six months?
2. If I register the car in Virginia for the duration of my stay am I going to have to pay the sales tax that I
didn't have to pay when I purchased it? I'm still paying the loan if that changes anything.
The motor vehicle sales and use tax based on the vehicle's sale price or $75, whichever is greater. If you do not have proof of the price that you paid for the vehicle, the sales and use tax will be assessed on the official NADA trade-in value. An additional $64 fee applies to electric vehicles, excluding mopeds. If the vehicle is 5 years or less model years old, you may submit a notarized Affidavit for Procurement of Title (SUT 1A) attesting to the sale price.
You will also need to have valid insurance in VA before you title the vehicle.
