If you've never owned a car, you will learn quickly a few important truths about cars:
1) No one is impressed by them
2) They are all money pits
3) You don't necessarily get what you pay for
I could afford much more car than I drive now. But, I opted to pay as little as I could to tick all the boxes: big, comfortable, and reliable. That ended up being around $11K for a used Ford.

You don't have the box that says "makes me smile" and it's a big factor to many people. Probably the minority though.
You are 100% right. I guess that I'm not a car guy and don't really know anything or even like cars, hence this post.
You answered your own question. If you're not a car guy, and don't even like them, you'd be much better off without one. I had an uncle who managed to go 83 years without even having a drivers license. He was one of the most well adjusted, kind, and optimistic people I've ever met. He was married for 60 years and had two children, and 6 grandkids all without a car.

One of the most useless dads of all time! I mean that in the nicest way possible way though.
I think of all the things I do for my kids by driving them around every single day. Just yesterday I used it to 1) drive them to and from camp, 2) go back and watch their special camp show at noon, 3) take them to soccer. What did he do to compensate? Can't take the bus in suburbia to do these things... maybe he was a city guy, in which case, many people can and do get by without a car.

Yes, he was a city guy and was well versed in every available form of public transportation available to him. Being that he was also selfless and affable, his endless neighborly favors were rewarded in kind. He just really didn't like cars or driving. He often told me he would never move to the suburbs because they didn't make sense.
